TheAi??AmazonAi??Film Festival comes to London showcasing culture and arts from BrazilA?s north region
BrazilA?s north region is one of the most important, mysterious and discussed parts of the world but still lacks attention and awareness of its cultural legacy. Amidst the hype of the World Cup,Ai??TheAi??AmazonAi??Film FestAi??comes to London for the very first time bringing toAi??the Rich Mix,Ai??in Shoreditch, a vibrant string of films, documentaries, animations and short movies produced in the region by local filmmakers. From 10thAi??to 12thAi??July, the festival will present an extraordinary showcase ofAi??AmazonA?s culture, society, environment and political issues. The event will be followed by the photo exhibition calledAi??Visions of theAi??Amazon, presenting the art of five Amazonian Photographers from 14thAi??June to 30thAi??July.Ai??TheAi??AmazonAi??Film Fest presents 6 feature films and 5 short movies, a truly Amazonian party and a family day dedicated to the little ones.

The Festival is produced by Instituto BR, a non-governmental organisation promoting 21st century Brazil via contemporary Brazilian Culture and Brazilian Portuguese language.

An animation that tells theAi?? myth of the traditional use of the controversial ayahuasca, aAi??psychedelic brew of various plant infusions used by indigenous people from the heart of the Amazon rainforest.. Currently in the news in the UK because of the recent death of a British student in Colombia who was suspected of having ingested it, this animation reflects on the culture surrounding ayahuasca and the Yawanawa people who imbibe it, The film was made by drawing workshops and storytelling with the Indians themselves. The dialogues and songs, in the language of Yawanawa’s, were recorded in their own community.

AAi??personal account of 20 years of video activism in Corumbiara, a municipality in North Brazil. In order to stop the destruction of the habitat of this group of isolated Native Americans, their existence has to be proven in court. Back in 1986, filmmaker Vincent Carrelli first got involved in a hunt for the remains of an Indian village, which had been wiped off the map by a landowner. The film documents the heart warming contact between the researchers and a family of CanoAi?? Indians, and contains unique footage of one of the last survivors of an unknown tribe. The Brazilian government is planning to build a vast number of big dams on the Amazon river and its tributaries, destroying biodiversity and disrupting the way of life of thousands of Amerindians. Now that the work is well under way on the huge Belo Monte dam on the Xingu river, the government is pushing ahead with its next big project – a series of dams on the Tapajos river. But 12,000 Munduruku Indians, long feared as warriors, live here and are fighting back.
This documentary, filmed in late 2013 and early 2014, looks at life in a Munduruku village, where traditional skills are practised and children are brought up with remarkable freedom. It documents the growth of resistance, even among the women, not traditionally fighters, some of whom are emerging as guerreiras (woman warriors).
