A fresh look at one of the most exciting cultural scenes on the planet, from those who know it best.
Over the last few years, Brazil has proven itself to be one of the countries at the forefront of innovation in the creative world, with exciting developments across all artistic disciplines. While for many years the country stood on the peripheries of international decision-making processes, with artistic expression stifled by a military dictator censorship (1964-1985), the Brazil of 2014 is a country brimming with opportunity and this new book by Phaidon presents a timely celebration of its flourishing creative scene.
Recent months have seen increased international attention focused on Brazil. Looking beyond the familiar clichAi??s of football, carnival and caipirinhas, Brazil: A celebration of contemporary Brazilian culture showcases the most exciting and influential works across the following creative fields: art, architecture, design, fashion, film, food, graphic design, music, photography and street art. Each chapter opens with an insiderai??i??s guide by a distinguished Brazilian expert, explaining the recent history of the subject, current themes and trends and the authorai??i??s predictions for the future.
This is followed by 6-10 case studies highlighting the key artists, chefs, designers and practices to look out for. Each case-study is fully illustrated with the best examples of their work, exploring figures such as Alex Atala and his profound influence on the next generation of young Brazilian chefs like Helena Rizzo and brothers Thiago and Felipe Castanho; the legacy of legendary architect Oscar Niemeyer, as seen in the buildings of contemporary practitioners such as Marcio Kogan and JoA?o Filgueiras Lima and even in the fashion designs of Pedro LourenAi??o; and the prevalence of musicians, like rapper Emicida, in the face of a music and film market heavily affected by piracy.
The perfect gift for anybody interested in culture, travel and creativity, Brazil provides an overview of one of the most exciting countries on the planet. This is Brazil by Brazilians, a look book for a whole nation and a source of inspiration for creatives everywhere.
