An overview of Colonial Brazil from 1500 until 1825: Who are Brazilians? Interpretations, myths and the incorporation of the changing nature of national identity. What is Brazil? At the time when Brazil declared its independence from Portugal in 1822, Brazil was already 322 years old. How did these long colonial centuries influence Brazil’s territorial expansion, ethnic formation, and economic links to Portugal, Africa, and the wider world? Why and when did Brazil become different? The impact of the loss of Portuguese independence to Spain between 1580 and 1640, the Dutch challenge in the mid seventeenth century, and the impact of the transfer to Brazil in late 1807 of the Portuguese Court, and the establishment of Rio de Janeiro in 1808 as the center of the Portuguese Empire until the early 1820s. The reasons for the contrast between Brazil’s historical development and that of Spanish America. These will all be examined.
Kenneth Maxwell is a historian and former lecturer at Harvard, Columbia and Princeton, and author of Conflicts and Conspiracies: Brazil and Portugal, 1750 – 1808 (2012), and Naked Tropics (2003).

O impacto da perda da independência Português para a Espanha entre 1580 e 1640, o desafio holandês em meados do século XVII, e do impacto da transferência para o Brasil no final de 1807 do Tribunal Português, e ao estabelecimento de Rio de Janeiro, em 1808, como o centro do Império Português até a década de 1820 mais cedo. As causas para o contraste entre o desenvolvimento histórico do Brasil e da América espanhola.
Palestrante: Kenneth Maxwell é historiador e professor universitário em Harvard, Columbia e Princeton, e autor de Conflitos e conspirações: Brasil e Portugal, 1750 – 1808 (2012), e nu Trópicos (2003).
