Gandaia has a group of Maracatu Mafua led by Mariana Pinho who has excelled in different events. This month the group along with Dende Group led by Mac Preto Velho, will dance and percussion workshop on 16/04 from 7pm until 10pm.

Formed in 2009, the group has spread the rhythms of Maracatu, Ijexa, Coco and Ciranda through both educational and performances, including Notting Hill Carnival! Winner of 2012 Awards for Dance & Folk at Brazilian Press Awards – Focus Brazil the band is now opening its activities to recruit enthusiastic percussionists to join their Mafua Bloco on their summer events and continue to spread the colours and grooves from Pernambuco- northeast of Brazil.

DRUMMING with Mac Preto Velho
Mac is the musical director of Dende, a community focused group which concentrates on dissemination of culture from around the world. Has introducing samba reggae and capoeira to broaden people’s awareness of Afro brazilian culture by working in schools for the past 10 years. Has played with various percussion groups in London and Europe giving his repertoire a wide range of flavours. Key director of music sections from Carnival groups in Notting Hill Carnival Parade, Thames Festival, City of London Festival, Carnival Del Pueblo amongst others. For 2013 he is keen on taking the group into other forms of brazilian culture in partnership with Gandaia for the spring/summer season in UK.

DANCE with Mariana Rabello Pinho
Mariana is an expert on brazilian culture and has devoted the last 8 years to spread her passion in Europe! Runner up for Best Brazilian Dance Teacher and Dance Performer at LUKAS Awards.
The artists divides her time teaching, performing and producing! Recently arrived from Brazil where she is constantly training and researching culture and developing cultural interchange programs between Brazil and UK. Here she shares the base given by her mentors Anderson Nogueira ( Maracatu Nacao Pernambuco) and Mabel Carvalho ( Bale Popular do Recife) and many other teachers that has inspired her along the years!
