Michael Palin talks about his documentary on Brazil @ King’s Brazil Institute

Culturart was present at the interview and discussion with travel writer and broadcaster Michael Palin, who recently did a documentary with the BBC about Brazil, at King`s Brazil Institute on 22nd April. Spending 4 months in Brazil, the series depicted profiles of Brazilian culture in four different locations showing a different side to the usual vision of Brazil.

During the interview, he was accompanied by the television director John-Paul Davidson and Dr Jeff Garmany, who led the interview. Between questions, clips from the documentary in Brazil were shown. The themes vary between the rich cultural diversity of Brazil, environmental conservation and the favela pacification process.

According to King’s College, Michael Palin ‘has been travelling the world for nearly twenty five years, making documentaries for the BBC. He also was president of the Royal Geographical Society from 2009-2012’. He had never been to Brazil and now, with the country being the centre of international attention as a result of the World Cup and Olympic and Paralympic Games, he decided that now was the moment to go to Brazil.
When asked what most surprised him during his travels in Brazil, he responded by saying ‘When I go to a new place, I try not to read too much about it beforehand because I like to be surprised by a country. However, Brazil was exactly how I imagined it to be – bright, lively, with beautiful beaches and music – a wonderfully happy place. It’s a huge country, so there were definitely some things which surprised me; I learnt the importance of religion in Brazilian society’.

John-Paul Davidson, filmmaker and television producer has worked with Palin since 2002, and once again did on the Brazil documentary, a four part series. Unlike Michael, he had already travelled to Brazil in 1980 and said that he thought there was a new confidence in the country which hadn’t existed twenty years ago.
Both speakers told funny stories from their travels, for example how they had gained permission to visit a tribe in the Amazon. John-Paul said that they had held negotiations with the tribe over Skype and added ‘When I had visited 20 years ago, they had asked for weapons and bullets in exchange for access to their territory. Clearly times have changed – this time they asked for computers and camera equipment’. This obviously generated laughter in the room. They also confirmed how the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the World Cup are going to put a sustained focus on Brazil over the next five years.

At the end, the floor was open to questions, where only a few comments were made. Two Brazilian students from the university spoke about the documentary, with one praising it and the other saying they did not recognised the Brazil which was shown. And what do you think?

O Culturart esteve presente na entrevista e discussão com o escritor de viagens e radialista, Michael Palin, que fez um documentário recente para a BBC sobre o Brasil. Após a equipe passar 4 meses no Brasil, foi lançada uma ‘série de perfis da cultura brasileira’ em quatro partes, em que muitos brasileiros não se identificaram com o Brasil mostrado.
Durante a entrevista, Palin esteve acompanhado pelo diretor de televisão John-Paul Davidson e pelo Dr. Jeff Garmany, que conduziu a entrevista. Entre uma pergunta e outra, foram mostrados trechos do documentário no Brasil. Os temas variaram entre a rica diversidade cultural do Brasil, a conservação ambiental e o programa de pacificação das favelas.

De acordo com o King’s College, Michael Palin “vem percorrendo o mundo por quase um quarto de século, fazendo documentários para a BBC. Ele também foi presidente da Royal Geographical Society 2009-2012”, nunca tinha ido ao Brasil e, agora, com o Brasil sendo o centro das atenções internacionais devido a Copa do Mundo e os Jogos Olímpicos e Paraolímpicos, decidiu ir ao país.

Na entrevista, Palin foi perguntado sobre “o que mais surpreendeu enquanto viajava pelo Brasil?”, ao qual ele respondeu: “Quando vou a um lugar novo, eu tento não ler muito sobre isso com antecedência porque gosto de ser surpreendido por um país. No entanto, o Brasil foi exatamente como eu imaginei que seria – brilhante, animado, com belas praias e música – um lugar maravilhosamente feliz de estar. É um país enorme, por isso não foram definitivamente algumas coisas que me surpreenderam, mas percebi a importância da religião na sociedade brasileira”.
John-Paul Davidson, cineasta e produtor de televisão que trabalha com Palin desde 2002, foi quem sugeriur que o documentário fosse dividido em uma série de quatro partes. Diferente de Michael, ele já havia viajado ao país na década de 1980, e surpreeendeus-se com a nova confiança observada entre a população, algo que não existia há 20 anos atrás.

Ambos os palestrantes contaram histórias divertidas que aconteceram na viagem como, por exemplo, como eles tiveram permissão para visitar uma tribo local da Amazônia. John-Paul disse que eles conduziram as negociações com a tribo via Skype, e acrescentou: “Quando os visitei há 20 anos, eles nos pediram armas e balas em troca de acesso a seus territórios. É evidente que os tempos mudaram – desta vez eles pediram computadores e equipamentos de câmera”. O comentário, obviamente, gerou risos na sala de entrevista. Além disso, os dois atentaram ao fato de que os Jogos Olímpicos e Paraolímpicos e Copa do Mundo vão colocar o Brasil em foco ao longo dos próximos cinco anos.
