The small, poor town of Javé in northeast Brazil is going to be flooded by a new dam unless its inhabitants can prove that it has some historical value. The task of drawing up a “scientific document” containing people’s memories of the town’s past falls to the only literate member of the community, Antônio Biá (José Dumont), but it soon transpires that no two stories are alike.
