A weekend celebrating the spirit of Pelourinho, Salvador – a cultural hub in north-eastern Brazil. Join us for drumming, dance and spoken word hosted by artists and young people from Brazil and London.
Pelourinho is one of Southbank Centre’s closest neighbourhood partners as a result of years of artistic partnership and creative exchange, bringing together communities from Brazil and the UK.

16 August 2013, 6.30pm FREE – Kinetika Bloco
A performance group with an exuberant mix of young brass and woodwind players, drummers, steelpan and dynamic dancers, all in costume, creating a ‘unique new British Carnival sound with a decidedly London edge’ (BBC Radio 2).
Drawing on influences from the Caribbean, Brazil, West and Southern Africa, New Orleans jazz, funk and hip-hop, these young performers collaborate with members of Banda Didá for the first time to create a new show.
Kinetika Bloco perform on both Friday and Saturday.
17 August 2013, 12:00pm FREE – Campêlo Cia de Dança
We welcome dancer, choreographer and teacher Tatiana Campêlo, who comes to London with her company Campêlo Cia de Dança.
Tatiana leads Afro-Brazilian dance workshops, for which she is famous in Pelourinho. Her company performs (in Tatiana’s more contemporary style) on Sunday evening.
17 August 2013, 1pm FREE – Drumming Workshop: Banda Didá
A drumming school for girls and women in Pelourinho, Banda Didá teaches music and dance skills but also focuses on the emotional and social development of its members.
Rehearsing regularly in the streets of Pelourinho, the familiar sound of Banda Didá is the heartbeat of the city.
Members of Banda Didá come to Southbank Centre for the first time to perform on Saturday, and lead drumming workshops across the weekend.
17 August 2013, 2.30pm Samba Workshop – BOOK TICKET
London-based samba groups share their take on Samba performance.
Taking inspiration from Brazil, samba groups and blocos are popping up all over the UK to teach and share this vibrant community-focused music and dance tradition.

17 August 2013, 3pm Afro – Brazilian Dance Workshop – FREE
London-based teacher Mariana Pinho leads an Afro-Brazilian dance workshop.
This workshop is programmed in partnership with ADAD (The Association of Dance of the African Diaspora).

17 August, 2013, 4pm Balé Folclórico da Bahia FREE
Dancers, musician and singers form Brazil’s folk dance company Balé Folclórico da Bahia, which is based in Pelourinho. The company performances are based on Bahian folkloric dancers of African origin and include capoeira , samba and dances once practiced by slaves, with reference to the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé.
Dancers from Balé Folclórico da Bahia teach workshops in Brazilian folk dance and capoeira and perform on Sunday evening.

A screening of this 20-minute film, which follows three women as they compete to become the carnival queen of Ilê Aiyê – a controversial Afro-Brazilian group with an all black membership based in Salvador, near Pelourinho.
17 August 2013, 8:30pm FREE – Afro Jho
Rapper Afro Jho has been an ambassador of Southbank Centre’s work in Pelourinho. Afro Jho returns to London for the second time to create an upbeat performance alongside other Brazilian artists on Saturday evening.

Tatiana Campêlo will teach an Afro-Brazilian dance routine to be performed on the terrace at 3pm.
Everyone is invited to join the workshops in preparation for a group performance, accompanied by live drumming.
Beginners and experiences dancers alike are encouraged to take part. It’s all about having fun and feeling the Afro-Brazilian vibe!

Following dance and drumming workshops at 11am, 12 noon, 2pm and 3pm, beginners create a performance on the Riverside Terrace.

Experts in Brazilian martial art capoeira demonstrate their moves.
Capoeira looks like a cross between dance, acrobatics and martial arts. In the public squares of Pelourinho people of all generations ‘play’ capoeira together.
Capoeiristas from Pelourinho show us how it’s done. Watch a live demonstration before taking part in the workshop at 4pm.
