LIVE MUSIC 7.30pm Cris Ortiz, Brazilian Pianist , Part of Classical Season @ Southbank ( Queen Elizabeth Hall, Belvedere Road, SE1 8XX)   020 7960 4200 From £10 until £35

Cristina Ortiz, one of Brazil’s most celebrated pianists and long resident in London, offers the International Piano Series a celebration of Chopin at his most inventive. She performs all of his Ballades and Scherzos, alternating the genres throughout the concert, providing an unusual chance to savour the contrast between them.

Chopin’s limitless imagination is at its finest in these compelling pieces. The scherzos are mercurial works, sometimes demoniac, sometimes skittish, demanding rapid fingerwork and an even more rapid musical response. The Ballades are extended, dramatic poems, all of which feature a rocking rhythm characteristic of the narrative verse from which they take their name.

‘The notes spilled out at such a speed and with such passion that it left me gasping.’ (The Independent on Sunday)
