On 23rd June Kingai??i??s College welcomed readers and supporters of Culturart attending a special ai???2 for 1ai??i?? event: the screening of ai???Orgulho de ser Brasileiroai??? and the live streaming of the World Cup Match of Brazil against Cameroon. The Head of Kingai??i??s Brazil Institute, Anthony Pereira, opened the event by talking of the partnership between the Institute and Culturart, followed by the CEO of Culturart, Shirley Nunes, who highlighted how the organisation of the event reflected one of the commitments of the organisation: supporting artistic and cultural Brazilian endeavours by independent professionals working outside Brazil. Staff from Culturart also greeted guests with a notepad, pencil and a Brazilian Events GuideAi??by Culturart, and two flyers supporting the Amazon Film Fest link and Brasiliance. These two events will take place in July at Rich Mix in Shoreditch; the audience was a hodgepodge of different nationalities (Brazilians, English, Spanish, Italians, etc.) and couldnai??i??t wait for the film to start.

The film

Orgulhodeserbrasileiro_CulturartBrazil_byFernandoBA (27)The film was produced by Brazilian journalist, Adalberto Piotto, who flew directly over from Sao Paolo for the London event. The documentary portrays the vision of important Brazilian figures from the musical scene and from the fields of science, economy, art, religion and the public health sector amongst others. These people are well known, like former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso; artist and sculptor Romero Britto; Carlos Alberto Parreira, coach of the Brazilian Team during the 1994 World Cup; former Senator and Minister, Marina Silva; playwright Gerald Thomas; singers Simoninha and Max de Castro, and many others. Most of them speak on the dichotomy of Brazil, discussing pros and cons and feeling mixed emotions for their country, such as pride, love, disappointment and hope.
What is the Brazilian public health system like? Are Brazilian soap operas the opium of the people? Why does the driver with the most expensive car also have to be the same one throwing rubbish out of his window? Is the University admission ranking system fair? Does Brazil know how to be successful? The numerous topics in the film captured the audienceai??i??s attention from start to finish, provoking laughter and thoughtful murmurs. The film is an unprecedented and fascinating vision on all of Brazil which will lead you on a journey of personal and social reflexion as a Brazilian and as citizen of Brazil.

The audience and its questions

Orgulhodeserbrasileiro_CulturartBrazil_byFernandoBA (25)After the documentary, the audience had the possibility to express all of its emotions and opinions during a ai???heatedai??i?? Q&A session. The director decided to answer in Portuguese as a matter of personal identity and because he thought it the best way to express himself; for this reason, the session also included an interpreter. The audience asked why he chose to interview only successful Brazilians and left out poor people, to which the director countered that his was a conscious and differentiating choice. In fact, there are various Brazilian films out there showing solely poverty, violence and social inequality. He wanted to see if the ai???prideai??? in being Brazilian was also felt by the successful interviewees and how they analyse their country.Ai??Ai?? Another topic which was taken up by the audience was that most of the interviewees were from the south-eastern region of Brazil, which might somewhat restrict the scope of the countryai??i??s analysis and only show a fraction of what is going on. Adalberto Piotto explained that he was limited by his budget and limited running time of the documentary. However, there might be a sequel to the documentary (provided he finds partners willing to fund his project) and, in this way, broaden the number of interviews to other regions of Brazil. ai???I am proud of being Brazilianai??? ai??i?? was the direct and unwavering answer the director gave when asking himself that same question, bringing the Q&A session to an end. After all, he also allowed the pride of being Brazilian speak for itself, as the match against Cameron had already started.
