Back by popular demand, the UK Centre for Carnival Arts host its third Brazilian Carnival Encontro this September which features an incredible line up of Samba percussion, Brazilian dance and singing workshops plus spectacular performances from some of the UK most inspiring Carnival artists.
Brazilian Carnival Encontro 2013 is a celebration of Brazilian Carnival which takes place every year at the UK Centre for Carnival Arts and attracts audiences and artists from all over the UK, Europe and Brazil. For three days the UK Centre for Carnival Arts will be transformed into a mini Rio de Janiero. Some of the brightest stars of the international Samba scene will be leading workshops and performing over one unforgettable weekend.
Friday Encontro Symposium, FREE
This year the event kicks off on Friday 6th September with a free symposium for UK Carnival Artists to discuss common interests and how the Cultural sector can benefit from the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Sunday & Saturday Workshops £15/£10
On Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September audiences can take part in a series of samba percussion, Brazilian dance and costume workshops for all levels of experience. There’s a varied and eclectic programme of workshops to try from Samba Reggae, Orixa and Forro Dance workshops. Aspiring costume makers can try their hand at Brazilian Costume Making for Community Groups.
Whilst Samba musicians can experience an introduction session or perfect their existing skills and jam with leading Samba musicians JP Courtney, Carnival Collective and Mestre Marivaldo Paim.

The highlight of the weekend is the Saturday Night Showcase Party when Umpatacum, Ilu Axe, Maracatudo Mafua, Carnival Collective take to the stage for a fantastic evening of live Samba music and dance to get everyone in the Rio Spirit. Throughout the weekend audiences can soak up the exotic Brazilian atmosphere with authentic tasty Brazilian cuisine and Caipirinha cocktails in our award winning building dedicated to Carnival.
There is also a free programme of street performances which everyone can enjoy including Rhythms of the City, Sambassadors of Groove, Dj Calum Jader from Movimentos and much more!

Workshop Level KeyLevel 1 – these sessions are aimed at any level of experience. So, if you have never danced, drummed or sung in your life then this is for you. Equally, if you are a prodigy just waiting to be discovered there will be something to challenge you Level 2 – These sessions will move along at a decent pace with the need for some experience on your chosen instrument. All our tutors will ensure that those who are more experienced still feel challenged Level 3 – In these sessions participants will be expected to be proficient and have a fair amount of experience on your chosen area.
