Based in Barra da Tijuca, in the western part of Rio de Janeiro, the apartments that will serve as Olympic Village for the 2016 Games have already reached half of its construction completion.

The works started in July 2012 and buildings should be completed in the first semester of 2016, having a capacity of over 18000 people, including athletes and managers.

ai???It will be incredible having the best athletes in the world staying somewhere here in Rio to be part of the first Olympic and Paralympic Games ever hosted in South America. We are doing the best we can to guarantee the bestAi?? sports facilities, so they can focus to deliver their best performances.ai???Ai??Said the director of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Village, Mario Cilenti.

Seventeen of the 31 apartments of the facility have already been built and works should be completed in the 14 towers remaining by the end of this year, with internal details to be completed in 2015. The next step will be the instalation of overlay. Besides the apartments, there will also be a temporary medical centre, a cafe with a 5-thousand people capacity and a ginasium, as well as other facilities.
One of the great challenges is to guarantee full accessibility throughout the Village for the paralympic sportists arriving a few days after the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in 21 August 2016. The Paralympic Games start on 7 September 2016.

ai???We have a maximum of two or three days to make the transition from Olympic to Paralympic Villageai???, said Cilenti. ai???To do so, everything needs to be discussed and built now. There will be around 700 accessible toilets, as well as other common areas that should attend the needs of wheelchair users and not only but also, athletes with visual impairment and reduced mobility, among others.ai???
