A Cortina da Bába (The Magic Curtain)
By: Grupo Sobrevento (Brazil) One of the most established Brazilian puppetry companies, Grupo Sobrevento presents in Babá’s magic curtain a show developed in collaboration with Chinese shadow puppet master Liang Jun and performed to hundreds of children throughout South-America. A dream-like world waits patiently while Babá sews. As she dozes in the lamplight, the animals behind the curtain slowly awaken and begin their magical journey towards the town of Millamarchmantopolis. Based on the short story Nurse Lugton’s Curtain that Virginia Woolf wrote to her niece, beautiful shadow puppetry performed by four actors/puppeteers with original soundtrack. “ A masterclass of puppetry, light and film. Rehearsing Reality explores the lives of Brazil’s Landless Movement and their struggle for land at the point of interaction with Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, a technique that breaks with the conventions of traditional theatre by transforming passive beings into active participants of a theatrical scene. Rehearsing Reality has been presented in festivals in Europe, Brazil and USA.
Nina Simões was born in São Paulo, Brazil and moved to London in 1990. In her career, she has researched, produced and directed documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, development agencies and others. She has campaigned extensively to raise awareness of oppressed groups in her own country. Nina holds a PhD in new media from the University of Arts London and is currently the Director of Translimitstorytelling. (http://translimitstorytelling.org)
